In this talk, sociologist and sound artist Rémy Bocquillon will reflect on his time spent as a
visiting scholar at the University of Alberta, between the Department of Sociology and the
Sound Studies Institute, and as the 2023 SpokenWeb artist-in-residence. Looking back on
the different projects that came to fruition during that time – including a sound installation
currently featured in the SSI gallery – or the still ongoing ones, the talk will also be an
opportunity to think about the research practices and learning processes related to sound,
that Bocquillon wishes to explore between social sciences and sound art. If the question
about the possibility of a “thinking-with sounds” did not, and will not find a definitive
answer, it will hopefully open a multiplicity of possibles, and new paths to follow.
Rémy Bocquillon is a Postdoctoral researcher and Lecturer in Sociology at the Catholic
University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt, Germany. His research interests revolve around
epistemic practices bridging the gap between arts, science, and philosophy, which he
explores through his own creative work as a sound artist and musician. His latest
projects include the publication of his book “Sound Formations. Towards a sociological
thinking-with sounds” and the sound installation “Activating Space | Prehending the
City”.
