Over Party
In a sparsely decorated room hang inflated steel balloons. They spell an involuntary sound I make during an asthma attack. BAAH! The metal is garishly painted with a soundscape emitting through the hollow structure. This soundscape layers modulations on my harp and breathing that fluctuates between gentle and erratic. Facing off against the balloons is a splayed latex cast of a rubber chicken with built up material scarification. Together these works assert an overwhelming atmosphere of sound over a muddled celebration of respiratory illness.

Palpate: The Skin of a Mountain I Carry
Palpate features my harp in front of a sculptural backdrop. I have modified the instrument with wooden rocking legs that take on a bronchiole shape. The sound performed is an amalgamation of instrumental playing with live and recorded breathing that echoes from inside the harp.

Alicia Proudfoot is an interdisciplinary artist with a penchant to incorporate industrial process and technology into her projects. She delights in modifying her formal training in sculpture, harp, sound composition, and performance to engage people. Experimentation is valuable to her creative research about humour’s role as explored through her somatic archive on illness. Alicia received a BFA from the University of Alberta in 2016 and graduated with an MFA from NSCAD University in 2019. Currently she is a visiting academic at the University of Alberta exploring sound and sculpture.
