Are you a music scholar or artist interested in rescuing a cherished recording currently trapped on legacy media? Are you interested in current practices around audio archives?  This roundtable discussion will cover topics related to digitizing audio, dealing with old media (vinyl, cassettes, reel-to-reel tapes, and the dreaded 90s-era digital media such as CD-Rs and DAT tapes), and best practices for preservation, while also dealing with security and access issues.  This roundtable discussion will feature short presentations by four teams across Canada, including the Canadian Museum of History, the Centre of Sound Communities at Cape Breton University, the Research Centre for the Study of Music, Media, and Place at Memorial University, and the Sound Studies Institute at the University of Alberta.

The roundtable is free and will be moderated for live questions to the panel.

The goal of the CSN is to develop a mutual understanding among cultural communities through the creation, preservation, and dissemination of knowledge about their musical and cultural identities. Through teaching, research, and outreach, the CSN brings together researchers, educators, creators, performers, producers, and the public to promote areas of common interest in the promotion of the diversity and strength of musical cultures, in their many forms and locations, and to develop this collaboration in pursuit of those goals.
