becoming-noise: trans youth, queer spaces, and listening in deictic hope invites listeners to pay close attention to how sound shapes our experience of place – and to consider the importance of working in sound in creating safe spaces for queer and trans youth. Drawing on the idea that we experience the world first through feeling, the installation brings together a series of sound pieces that tune into the affective atmosphere of different locations and events. Participants recorded audio in and around Edmonton, at the Pride Centre, and along the North Saskatchewan River. They then actively responded to these places through sound, composing with/in place, to bring about a different affective tonality to the experience. Through the process, the co-researcher/participants mobilized a listening ethic founded in queer and trans joy.
