The Sound3 Lab for Sound Art, Sound Health, and Sound Communities is a small, well-equipped recording studio in the basement of the Arts and Convocation Hall building. Created and maintained through the collaboration of SSI and the Canadian Centre for Ethnomusicology, Sound3Lab supports a number of specific research projects within SSI, CCE, and the wider campus community. Sound3Lab opened officially at the end of March 2024, and is quickly becoming the go-to location for creating high-quality, professional recordings for campus projects.
The Sound3Lab and the technical services provided by an SSI audio engineer are available for all groups across campus, and for clients outside of the University. The specialized nature of the work and the sensitive, high-value equipment means that SSI must charge a fee for access to the facilities and for the services provided. For university groups, our fees are kept at lower rates than they would be for equivalent services at off-campus facilities.
Affiliated researchers may opt to be trained in using the studio equipment themselves, forgoing the services of an SSI audio engineer. Non-affiliated units are required to have an SSI engineer to operate the studio for their projects, except in special circumstances determined on a case-by-case basis.
If you are interested in making recordings for your research project in the Sound3Lab, we’d love to hear about it! Drop us a line for more information about booking the lab and about how it operates.
